Can you bring sex toys on a plane?

Everyone deserves to have a fulfilling sex life, so if you do want to take your sex toys on holiday, there is absolutely nothing to be ashamed of. That said, there are a few things to keep in mind if you want to keep your toys safe and save yourself some red-faced stress in the security line.

According to the TSA website, adult toys are allowed to be transported in both checked and carry-on luggage. However, to avoid any potential embarrassment during the security screening process, there are several tips to ensure that your intimate items are carried along as safely and discreetly as possible.

1.Wrap your toys in a cloth or drawstring bag.You don't want things that are destined for intimate use gathering dust and crumbs in the bottom of your suitcase - or worse, snuggled up to your shoes. It's also a good idea to hide things away in case security needs to search your luggage.Random spot checks are rare, but they do happen,so keep everything hidden from prying eyes.

2.If you have a battery operated toy, it might be a good idea to take out those batteries before packing. You may want to run out of rechargeable vibrators to charge as well, even if that means you can't break out your toy as soon as you land it. An impromptu buzz means unwelcome stares that you don't need in your life.Just remember this: it's totally your right to travel with your toy,so even if you're questioned, own it and remember that your sexuality is your prerogative.

Most batteries are allowed on board, but some airlines have restrictions on alkaline batteries (including AAA and AA batteries, which are most commonly used in sex toys) entering the cabin. To be on the safe side, please keep them in your carry-on luggage.

3.Bondage sex toys are trickier when on holiday.Whips, floggers and paddles may be confiscated as self-defence items, so unless you're willing to take that risk, leave them in the bedroom.

Handcuffs, ropes, nipple clamps and hoods are usually considered OK,so leave them next to each other and if possible put them in their original branded bags and label them so that the security staff know what each item is. These should go in your checked luggage though, not hand luggage. Please note that these items may be confiscated. They may be confiscated. This is a risk you take.

If you must carry strapping items in your hand luggage, choose carefully: eye masks, feather ticklers and straps should be OK as they are not threatening, but be aware that it is up to the airline to decide. If questioned, simply breathe, smile, calmly tell the security officer they are personal items and keep your head held high. They've seen it all before.

4.The regulation of sex toys varies greatly around the world, so save yourself the headache of having toys thrown away at security and check the rules carefully. Some countries ban adult toys and pornography altogether, including Thailand, India, Vietnam, the Maldives and Malaysia. If you live in the USA, then it's fine in all states except Alabama, where the sale of sex toys is a criminal offence.

Although many people have had sex on planes, it is important to remember that it is still illegal to have sex in a public place. You need to put away your sex toys before take-off and not use them until you have privacy at your hotel.
